Collagen? Call it a win for your skin

It’s happened to all of us. You’re searching for your next go-to anti-aging product. You turn it over to read the ingredient list, and you realize you can’t understand any of it. Suddenly you have become an investigator who must now learn to translate Latin and scientific symbols. Let’s face it, it’s overwhelming. But when it comes to anti-aging, collagen production is key. So, let’s dissect collagen and break it down so we can figure out how to build it back up!

Collagen comes from the Greek work “kólla” which translates to glue. It is found in our bodies and let me tell you we have plentiful amounts of this protein. Collagen is what provides structure to our bodies and is found in our skin as well as our bones and tendons. I admit, I am a skin therapist and not a scientist but let’s just think of collagen as the glue that holds things together. In our youth, we have an abundance of collagen in our bodies. But as we age, we produce less and less collagen and a collagen of lower quality.

This powerhouse protein doesn’t work alone though. Collagens partner in crime is elastin. These two do everything together including long walks on the beach, warding off wrinkles and lines and giving skin its texture and shape. Elastin is also a protein that has one amazing characteristic; it can snap back to its original shape! Therefore, maintaining healthy collagen and elastin levels is important in keeping your skin looking younger and keeping it strong. Keep on the look out for any v i s i b l e signs of aging. These consist of; fine lines and wrinkles, loss of volume, dull & lackluster, and dehydration. Other factors in premature aging consist of; environmental factors, diet and lifestyle, smoking, sun exposure, free radical damage. Some ingredients to look for to promote collagen production can be the following; Vitamin C; high in antioxidants, brightens and tightens the skin. Hyaluronic acid; plumps and hydrates. Amino acids; building blocks of peptides and proteins, maintains hydration, improves skin texture and resilience. I know what you’re thinking, “she’s twenty-six, what does she have to worry about?”. Well the truth is, your collagen production (and your social life) slows down significantly in your mid-twenties, and you guys know I am all about prevention. Here are some of my go-to products that will help maintain youthful and strong skin!
