Down and dirty with Dermaplaning

Hey guys! Welcome back. I am so excited to be writing about this service that has completely changed my life and my skin… Dermaplaning! It’s true, I am a sucker for a beauty trend. So, when I started considering this, I thought it would just be another thing I loved for a while and then my feelings would level out, as they do for most things. But I must say, I have been swept away by this service and it looks like we are going to be in a lifetime relationship.

As someone who performs the service and has received the treatment, Dermaplaning ticks all the boxes for me. As a service provider, I see everything I want to see when I am treating the skin. Being able to physically see the exfoliation and removal of dead surface cells appeals to me in the same way that pimple popping does. It is so satisfying to see everything come off the skin. As a consumer, I am equally thrilled. The texture and tone of my skin has improved; my skin has honestly never looked or felt better. I have been quite happy with my skincare routine over the years but getting Dermaplaning done has also enhanced the benefits of my home care.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a painless skin treatment that uses an exfoliating blade to skin dead skin cells and hair from your face. It is sometimes called blading or microplaning. It is a safe treatment and requires no down time. The basic concept of Dermaplaning is like shaving in many ways. We aim a sterile blade at a 45-degree angle and gently scrape the surface cells and soft vellus hair off the skin. It is very important to understand that this is an exfoliation treatment and not a hair removal treatment. Hair removal is just a secondary benefit to this service but it is designed to exfoliate the skin primarily.

Why is exfoliation important?

As we get older our skin turnover cycle slows down so we need to help it to maintain soft healthy skin. Exfoliation is key in promoting cell turnover. The gentle scraping of the skin acts as a physical exfoliation. Your skin is exposed daily to environmental irritants and sun damage. This can cause the top layer of your skin to appear dull and lackluster. Exfoliation clears away dead skin cells so you see the new cells when you look in the mirror. If your skin has been rid of that top layer, your products will also be absorbed better which maximizes their benefit.

How is the hair removal beneficial?

Even though hair removal is considered a secondary benefit to Dermaplaning, it is still a benefit. Hairless skin is some of the cleanest skin in many ways. As we know, dead skin can get trapped on the skin and clog pores and cause breakouts. When you remove the hair, there is no place for the dirt, oil and skin to get trapped in. This results in fewer breakouts. The hair removal also makes for smoother makeup application and better product penetration.

Benefits of Dermaplaning:

  • Manual exfoliation technique.
  • Removes dead skin cells.
  • Removes surface debris.
  • Increases absorption of products.
  • Diminishes appearance of fine lines.
  • Reduces acne scarring.
  • Delivers healthy radiant appearance.
  • Removes facial hair.
  • Improves makeup application.

 Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is effective for most skin types but we do not recommend Dermaplaning for anyone with open or inflamed acne. The reason for this is the unevenness of the skin when it is inflamed and that Dermaplaning can overstimulate the skin and potentially cause more breakouts.

Dermaplaning results are not permanent. The procedure claims to clear away up to three weeks’ worth of dead skin cells. After 3 weeks to a month, your results will fade. We recommend that you receive this treatment every 4 weeks.
